The lucky star (paper star): a strip of paper tied into a pentagon, wrapped around itself and pinched so it puffs up into a little star. No square needed.
Cut a strip of paper about 1 cm (0.4 inch) wide and 25 to 30 cm (10 to 12 inches) long. Strips cut along the long side of a sheet of printer paper work well.
Tie a loose knot near one end of the strip. Pull it tight slowly and flatten it, so the knot becomes a neat pentagon.
Fold the short end over and tuck it inside the pentagon. Trim it first if it is too long.
Wrap the long end around the pentagon, following its edges, until only a short piece is left.
Tuck the last piece under the layer next to it.
Hold the star by two corners and press the middle of each edge in with a fingernail. Each edge caves in and the star puffs up.
Your lucky star is done. Make lots in different colours and keep them in a jar.
